plant magic, craft condiments, sustainable goods, food & garden education
A white hand holds a small harvest basket full of cosmo, coreopsis, calendula flowers and cherry tomatoes of varying size and shape in front of a tall sunflower in a sunny garden.

I created my spiced tomato spread to elevate meals & share the magic of seasonal produce all year round. Because it’s made with local, organic tomatoes sourced from small farms, I make as much as I can in August & September, and once it’s sold out, it’s gone until next year.

Jars are available individually, in bundles, and in discounted cases of 12. Get yours now!

This delicious and all-purpose condiment came about the way all my offerings do: an abundance of resources and a desire to transform the mundane into magical to share with family and friends. Fresh tomatoes, picked just a day or two before they make it into my jam pot, are combined with organic sugar, a touch of molasses, warming spices, salt, and lime juice, then cooked down until sweet, smoky, and spreadable. Each 8oz jar of spiced tomato spread contains about a pound of fresh tomatoes!

Spiced Tomato Spread is the “regular” version of this unique condiment, bringing the brightness and warmth of peak tomato season to your sandwiches, cheese boards, and morning eggs even in the depth of winter.

Smoky Spiced Tomato Spread (formerly known as Dark Moon) is a slightly spicier, slightly more savory version of the regular. With significantly more molasses and an extra dose of chili flakes, it has a depth of flavor reminiscent to a barbecue sauce and goes especially well with grilled meats and charcuterie.

Like all of my physical product offerings, Rascal Relish Spiced Tomato Spread is as sustainable and low-waste a product as possible. The tomatoes I use are mostly “seconds,” or fruits that don’t meet the aesthetic or structural standards to be sold at full price to consumers or restaurants. The farms I purchase from box up the tomatoes that don’t sell throughout the day at farmers markets and I pick up at end of day, or I go to the farms on the day of harvest to pick up field seconds. All tomatoes used in my products are FRESH, usually harvested the same day or the day before I jam them down, and aesthetics don’t matter when you’re jammin’. This means that the farmers still make a profit on ugly fruit, I can keep my costs relatively low, and the tomatoes aren’t wasted.

Honestly the best tomato jam I’ve ever had (don’t tell my aunt, who makes her own but it’s just not the same). I love it with eggs in the morning. Also with cheese and crackers. Ah! And sandwiches! Ok, so it’s delicious on everything.

BB Pickle Relish is a bread and butter pickle masquerading as relish. Don’t let that scare you off! It’s not too sweet, vibrantly spiced with fresh young onions, lots of mustard seeds, and a well-balanced brine.

BB Pickle Relish is the secret sauce your burgers, dogs, and sandwiches of all sorts have been missing. My favorite way to eat it is mixed in with tuna or chicken salad, served straight from the mixing bowl on some potato chips. You won’t be able to resist sneaking a bite straight from the jar just to get another taste of the pickled mustard seeds!

Like all of my physical product offerings, Rascal Relish BB Pickle Relish is as sustainable and low-waste a product as possible. The local farmers I buy from know that I will always take “ugly” or otherwise not fit for market veg, so lots of misshapen cucumbers end up on my cutting board! I also end up gleaning a good amount of cucumbers at the end of their season when the farmers get sick of the prickly hairs on cucurbit leaves and stems, and the tomatoes have stolen customers’ attention from earlier summer crops. The sweet young onions in BB Pickle Relish are often the first of the season, harvested when farmers are checking to see how the bulbs are sizing up. They’re uncured and a little small, but that’s what gives them so much flavor!

Pickled Carrots are the perfect addition to a charcuterie board, Bloody Mary, chicken salad, a green salad… or just as a crunchy, tangy snack! Big jars are crisp batons and small jars are grated, kind of like a relish— perfect for sandwiches!

Pickled Carrots are tangy, spiced, and delightfully crunchy. Farm fresh carrots in a classic brine with fresh garlic, tarragon, black pepper, red chili flakes, coriander, and dill seed. No added sugar because these carrots are sweet enough on their own!

Like all of my physical product offerings, Rascal Relish Pickled Carrots are as sustainable and low-waste a product as possible. I buy in bulk and try to source “juicing” or broken carrots straight from local farms, especially at the beginning and end of the season when they might be sweetened from frost. The nice straight parts of the carrot are chopped into batons for 8oz jars, and the extra bits get grated for the 4oz jars so that every last centimeter of usable carrot is pickled and perfect for you.

Oh my! Rascal Relish pickled carrots are delightful and well balanced. Full of complex flavor that make my senses smile. Perfectly crisp and invigorating. I love them for snacks and as an accoutrement for charcuterie boards. Thanks Sarah!! Yours passion shines through your craft!
